General Information

Board members are elected at-large to three-year terms representing the Pilot Point Independent School District.
Early voting and Election Day polling places are established by the Denton County Elections Administrator for Denton County voters, Cooke County voters, and Grayson County voters by virtue of a Joint Election Agreement with all three counties and other local entities.

General election of Board members shall be on the May uniform election date.

If an individual is interested in serving on the Pilot Point ISD Board of Trustees, the first day to file an application for a place on the ballot in a school district’s general election is the 30th day before the filing deadline. The filing deadline for a general election is 5 p.m. on the 78th day before election day. Tex. Educ. Code § 11.055(a); Tex. Elec. Code § 144.005. The deadline to file a declaration of write-in candidacy is 5 p.m. on the 74th day before Election Day. Applications will be available from the Superintendent’s office located in the Pilot Point ISD Administration Building, 829 S. Harrison Street, Pilot Point, TX 76258.

An application for a place on the ballot must be in writing; signed, sworn to by the candidate before a person authorized to administer an oath, and dated; timely filed with the district’s filing authority; and contain specified information about the candidate:

• The candidate’s name, date of birth and occupation;
• The candidate’s residence address or the address at which the candidate receives mail with a description of the location of the candidate’s residence;
• The candidate's length of continuous residence in Texas and in the district as of the date the candidate swears the application;
• If available, a public mailing address and email address at which the candidate receives correspondence relating to the candidate's campaign;
• The office sought, including any place or other distinguishing number and an indication of whether the office sought is for a full or unexpired term;
• Felony conviction status;
• Statements that the candidate is a U.S. citizen; has not been determined by a court to be mentally incapacitated; has not been convicted of a felony; is aware of the nepotism law; and swears an oath to support and defend the U.S. and Texas Constitution and laws.

To be eligible to be a candidate for, or elected or appointed to, the office of school board member, a person must:

1. Be a United States citizen.
2. Be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable.
3. Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
4. Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities [but see Ineligibility below].
5. Have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the territory from which the office is elected for six months immediately preceding the following date:
   1. For an independent candidate, the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate's application for a place on the ballot.
   2. For a write-in candidate, the date of the election at which the candidate's name is written in.
   3. For an appointee to an office, the date the appointment is made.
6. Be registered to vote in the territory from which the office is elected on the date described at item 5, above.

The Texas Education Code imposes additional requirements:

1. A person is ineligible to serve as a member of the board of a district if the person has been convicted of a felony or an offense under Penal Code 43.021 (solicitation of prostitution). Education Code 11.066
2. A person is not eligible to serve as a trustee of an independent school district if the person is required to register as a sex offender under Chapter 62, Code of Criminal Procedure. Education Code 11.061(b-1)
