FAMILIES EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS: MCKINNEY-VENTO

McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance

The McKinney-Vento Act protects the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness, including those who:

  • Are not living with a parent/guardian
  • Are doubled up with friends or family due to loss of housing
  • Are living in a hotel/motel, shelter, or transitional housing
  • Are living in a car, campground, or other place not meant for housing
  • Lack school records

Rights guaranteed to these students:

  • Immediate enrollment, even without normal paperwork
  • Choice to stay in their school of origin or attend school where they currently live
  • Transportation to their school of origin, if feasible
  • Automatic eligibility for school nutrition services
  • Services comparable to housed classmates (no segregation)

Pilot Point ISD is committed to supporting these families with dignity and respect during a time of transition. Residency surveys are available at every campus and online.
