Medication Administration Policy
Medication Administration Policy
Request for the Administration of Medications by School personnel may be made as follows:
(in accordance with Texas Education Code 22:052)
- A separate Medication Request Form is completed for each medication
- Only medications that cannot be given outside of school hours will be administered.
- All medication must be in the original, properly labeled container, accompanied by the completed Medication Request form. Changes in dosages require a new Medication Request Form signed by a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant with prescribing authority.
- Over-the-counter (OTC) medication will only be given to students if it is provided by the student’s parent or guardian. A Medication Request Form signed by a parent or guardian must accompany the medication in its original, unopened container. OTC medications will only be given as directed by the instructions on the container label.
- No dietary supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, performance boosters, or non-FDA approved medications will be given by school personnel unless directed by a physician and included in the student's IEP or 504 plan.
- All medications will be stored in a locked cabinet and administered in the health clinic/office.
- Students may self carry medications for asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies if authorized by their medical provider. This will need to be noted in their action plan. Students will also need to demonstrate to their campus nurse their ability to safely and correctly administer that medication. ALL OTHER MEDICATIONS NEED TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN. They should not be in the student’s backpack
- For safety reasons, no first doses of any medication will be administered at school.
- Unused/unclaimed medication will be discarded at the end of the school year. We highly encourage parents to pick up any unused medication. New Medication Request Forms will be required each school year.
