Safety and Security

Pilot Point ISD considers the safety and security of our students and employees to be a top priority. PPISD is continuously analyzing every aspect of our campus security measures. Every PPISD campus is guided by a detailed crisis management plan and conducts numerous drills throughout the school year, which include what to do when we have safety and security issues.

Pilot Point ISD utilizes an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), which is required by law, and was adopted by the PPISD Board of Education in 2006. The District holds regular safety meetings and conducts safety audits every three years. The EOPs are regularly updated in accordance with the most recent safety requirements and guidelines. Please understand that for the security of our students, staff, and parents, we cannot divulge the specifics of how we respond to certain security issues, but the safety of our students and staff continues to be the highest priority for our school district.

2025-2026 Pilot Point ISD Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) Summary

  • Pilot Point Independent School District (PPISD) is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The district’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) establishes procedures to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies that may impact our schools.

  • This plan applies to all Pilot Point ISD campuses, departments, and facilities. It provides a framework for district coordination with local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and emergency management agencies.

    • Protect the health, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors.
    • Maintain effective communication with parents, guardians, and the community.
    • Support timely, coordinated response with first responders and public safety partners.
    • Restore normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.

    • Each campus conducts regular emergency drills throughout the year, including fire, lockdown, evacuation, shelter-in-place, and severe weather drills.
    • District staff receive annual safety and emergency response training.
    • Pilot Point ISD participates in joint safety planning and exercises with local emergency agencies to ensure effective coordination.

  • In the event of an emergency, Pilot Point ISD will communicate with parents and guardians using:

    • District mass notification system (calls, texts, and emails)
    • Official PPISD website and social media accounts
    • Local media outlets (if needed)

    Parents are asked not to come to a campus until directed, as doing so may interfere with emergency response efforts.

  • If a situation requires students to be evacuated or relocated, PPISD will activate a controlled reunification process. Parents will receive specific instructions about the reunification site and procedures through the district’s communication channels.

    • Pilot Point ISD works closely with:
    • Pilot Point Police Department
    • Pilot Point Fire Department
    • Denton County Emergency Management
    • Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC)
    • Local and regional first responder agencies

  • The PPISD Emergency Operations Plan is reviewed and updated annually in compliance with Texas Education Code §37.108.
    A comprehensive version of the EOP is maintained internally and shared with appropriate safety partners. Certain portions contain sensitive operational and security details and are therefore not subject to public release under Texas Government Code §418.177.

  • The safety and well-being of our students and staff are the highest priorities of Pilot Point ISD. Through preparedness, collaboration, and ongoing training, we strive to ensure that every campus is ready to respond effectively to any emergency situation.

I Love You Guys Safety Protocols

Pilot Point ISD will continue to utilize the "I Love You Guys" Safety Response Protocols (SRP) for the upcoming year.
The "I Love You Guys" Foundation offers a proven and effective approach to emergency preparedness and response, empowering both students and staff to be proactive in ensuring their safety. It is important that all Ponder families and staff understand the different SRPs and that we are all using the same language in these situations. Drills for each of these SRPs are frequently held on campus to help train students and staff.

Safety Response Protocols (SRP)

  • Secure - The building is put in a secure mode based on activity in the surrounding area, not in the school or on school grounds. School staff will move all students and activities inside and ensure the building is locked while learning continues inside the school with minimal classroom interruption or distractions.
  • Lockdown - The building is put on lockdown due to perceived danger inside or very near the building. All students and staff are trained to get behind a locked door - Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.
  • Evacuate - Our students and staff are moved to a new or safe location due to a situation in or near the school building.
  • Shelter - Our students and staff are instructed to take safe shelter due to a situation in or near the school. These could include weather events or hazmat issues.
  • Hold - Our students and staff are instructed to clear the hallways and remain in classrooms with minimal classroom distraction or interruption until "All clear" is announced.

Parent Guide:

As a result of the passage of Senate Bill 11 during the 86th Texas Legislative Session, TEC Chapter 37.114: Emergency Evacuations; Mandatory School Drills was added. This new section addresses mandatory school drills for public school districts and open-enrollment charters.

Specifically, it states that the commissioner, in consultation with TxSSC and the State Fire Marshal, must adopt rules that provide procedures for evacuating and securing school property during an emergency. This includes designating the number of mandatory school drills to be conducted each semester of the school year, not to exceed eight drills each semester and sixteen drills for the entire school year. Neither this rule, nor the law, precludes a school district or an open-enrollment charter school from conducting more drills as deemed necessary and appropriate by the district or charter school.

Pilot Point ISD has set a drill calendar for the school year. This drill calendar affords the district the opportunity to practice a variety of drills from the Standard Response Protocols from the I Love You Guys Foundation. These drills are teachable moments for how to respond to different crisis situations.
