Device Policy

Pilot Point ISD Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy

In Compliance with Texas HB 1481

Purpose

To provide a focused, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment, Pilot Point ISD prohibits the use of personal communication devices (PCDs)—including cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, tablets, pagers, or laptops not issued by the school, or any device capable of sending or receiving wireless communication—at any time during the instructional day, in alignment with Texas House Bill 1481.

Definitions

  • Personal Communication Device (PCD): A telephone, a cell phone such as a smart phone or a flip phone, tablet, smartwatch, radio device, or any other electronic device capable of telecommunication or digital communication. 
  • School Day: The school day is defined as the period from when students enter the building in the morning until dismissal time at the end of the day. 
  • School Property: School property includes the physical premises of the campus.

Prohibition for All Students

  • Students will not be permitted to use personal communication devices during the school day. 
  • Personal communication devices must be stored in a backpack that is maintained in the front of the classroom, a locker, or another secure location not on the student's person during the school day. 
  • Personal communication devices must be turned off during the entirety of the school day. 

Exceptions

A student may be allowed to have a personal communication device upon receipt of written consent from campus administration and documentation supporting one or more of the following exceptions:

  • Use of the personal communication device is only to the extent necessary to implement a student's IEP or Section 504 plan. 
  • Use of the personal communication device is only to the extent necessary and directed by a qualified physician licensed to practice in the State of Texas. 
  • To the extent it is necessary to comply with the District or School's safety protocols or as required by law.
