Dedicated to Excellence

SB12

In accordance with Texas Senate Bill 12, school counselors are required to obtain parent/guardian consent for a variety of counseling-related services and supports provided to students throughout the school year. In an effort to streamline this process and reduce the number of individual consent forms sent home, many of these required permissions have been incorporated directly into this year’s student registration process. We encourage families to carefully review each section.

Within registration for the 2026-27 School year the following categories require consent, more information is embedded within registration as some items are age specific.

  • Professional school counselors work with students who may have mental health issues, drug & alcohol experimentation, family issues, etc. However, professional school counselors in Texas do not provide family counseling, psychological services, drug & alcohol counseling, or therapy. Instead, school counselors work directly with students on problem solving skills, self-regulation, good decision-making patterns, knowing what the student can control and what is beyond their control, etc. These skills help students be more successful in school, but school counselors will also work with students on how those skills can apply to all areas of their lives.

  • The following are prevention lessons, some are mandated by the state of Texas. In order for your student to be a participant in these prevention lessons consent must be provided.

  • Student surveys provide direct insight into students’ experiences, needs, and perceptions. By gathering feedback from students, counselors can better identify trends related to academic support, social-emotional well-being, and school climate. This information helps guide data-driven decisions, allowing counselors to design targeted interventions, adjust programming, and allocate resources where they are most needed. Additionally, student surveys give students a voice in the counseling program, helping ensure that services remain relevant, responsive, and supportive of the entire student population. Our Surveys are designed to met the needs of our students by campus, age and grade, therefore varying slightly from campus to campus in deliver and format.

All questions within the surveys fall underneath one or more of the categories below:

    • School Counselor Awareness and Accessibility
    • Academic Development and Achievement
    • College, Career and Postsecondary Readiness
    • Personal and Social Developments
    • Crisis Response, Student Safety and Support
    • Professionalism, Equity and Ethical Practice
    • Program Improvement and Student Voice
